REVIEW

Micromax’s new IN 2B smartphone is what you want it to be. It is one of the cheapest smartphones on the market right now. That is because Micromax wants to creep into every price category you have for smartphones. But from a bigger perspective, Micromax realized that the entry-level segment in India is no longer what it used to be. Most dynamic players that once ruled the entry-level price category are slowly moving up. Heck, they are aiming for the premium category, and that leaves a sweet spot for Micromax to wrest customers in the best way possible.
That way involves selling patriotism through smartphones and now earbuds. Micromax’s new IN brand came riding on the anti-China sentiment last year, and even though that seems like a good pitch, a phone’s success depends on how good it can be. Previous IN series phones have proved their mettle. They have gathered mostly good reviews, and that is why Micromax is back with another phone. The Micromax IN 2B seems like a stylish phone at first sight, but that is not all. I used IN 2B for some time and here is my first impression.
The IN 2B is an entry-level phone, so naturally, my expectations were not quite high. But Micromax’s IN 2B punches above the weight with its design. It looks classy. There are three colors to choose from, but the one I used has a black color. There is a speaker on the back of the phone, so is the fingerprint sensor. The IN branding sits at the bottom but, because it is not too big, it blends with the rest of the finish. The camera island juts out, which may be an issue unless you use a mobile case. Micromax provides one, so there is no excuse for not using it. I will tell you more about the phone’s build quality in my review.
There is a 6.52-inch display with an HD+ resolution. I found this display very colorful and bright but I cannot tell you how good or bad this display is at this point. While I will tell you that in my review, it does look like the display Micromax’s IN 2B is not going to disappoint. The resolution is not an issue either. The phone has a fingerprint sensor that I think will work well.
The phone uses a Unisoc T610 processor under the hood. Now, this is an entry-level processor, so you cannot expect much from it. I threw some apps at this processor in my initial testing and the phone seems to be faring well so far. I have a hunch this phone will be able to handle most apps, but even if there are any shortcomings, you will have to keep in mind the price of the phone. For what it is worth, Micromax is already claiming that IN 2B is a “no hang phone”. And even though I buy into that, I am yet to test it. The IN 2B comes with up to 6GB of RAM and that is going to be very helpful.
The 13-megapixel dual-camera system on the back of the Micromax IN 2B will definitely click basic photos, but whether it will match the expectations for this price is something I will check over the next few days. I will tell you about my experience with IN 2B’s camera and photography software. Talking about software from a larger perspective, Micromax IN 2B has stock Android. Now, this is an interesting approach by Micromax because the rest of the phones in this market come with custom skins. And this is not even an Android Go version, so the IN 2B definitely has an upper hand.
